Seventeen people lost their lives in a devastating road accident early this morning along Seke Road near the Hunyani Bridge, plunging the nation into grief.
The fatal crash involved a 30-tonne haulage truck and a commuter omnibus, which was left completely crushed under the weight of the larger vehicle following a violent collision.
While investigations are ongoing, early eyewitness reports suggest the incident may have been triggered by a Honda Fit that allegedly veered into the path of the haulage truck. In an apparent attempt to avoid hitting the smaller car, the truck driver reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with the commuter minibus.
The force of the impact wedged the minibus beneath the haulage truck, resulting in extensive fatalities and a chaotic scene of destruction.
Emergency personnel responded swiftly, managing to rescue three severely injured passengers, who were rushed to a nearby hospital. The wreckage was so severe that the minibus was flattened beyond recognition.
Onlookers described a harrowing scene, with mangled metal, broken glass, and debris scattered across the road. Paramedics and firefighters are still on-site, working to retrieve the remaining bodies and clear the crash debris.
Seke Road has been temporarily shut down to allow emergency teams to continue rescue and recovery operations without interference. Police are working to identify the deceased, while families of the victims have begun gathering at the scene in anguish.
Authorities are urging members of the public to stay clear of the area to ensure that recovery efforts can proceed without disruption.
The tragic event has reignited calls for enhanced road safety measures and greater caution by motorists on Zimbabwe’s highways.
