British boxing star Anthony Joshua has reportedly suffered injuries following a serious road traffic accident in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two people.
The former world heavyweight champion, aged 36, was travelling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV when the crash occurred. Authorities say Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for medical attention.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle Joshua was in collided with a stationary truck after a tyre burst while the driver was overtaking. Officials indicated that the SUV may have been moving at a speed above the legal limit at the time of the incident.
Five adult men were said to be in the vehicle during the crash. Two passengers lost their lives instantly, while two others escaped without injury. Joshua was seated in the rear of the vehicle, directly behind the driver. No members of his family were present.
The boxer had reportedly travelled to Nigeria for a brief private visit. Emergency services responded swiftly as members of the public gathered at the accident scene.
Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo confirmed the incident, stating that the crash involved a moving vehicle colliding with a stationary one, leading to two fatalities. He added that Anthony Joshua was taken to hospital for treatment.
Witnesses said Joshua was travelling in a convoy, with a security vehicle following behind. Videos circulating on social media show bystanders helping a visibly shaken Joshua out of the badly damaged SUV, which was surrounded by broken glass.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed awareness of the incident and said efforts were ongoing to obtain full details, noting that early images suggested the boxer was not seriously hurt.
Anthony Joshua has ancestral ties to Sagamu in Ogun State, Nigeria.
