Sunday Tshuma (23), of Jongela Village under Chief Nkalakata in Nkayi, will spend the next three years behind bars after he was convicted in Tredgold Magistrates’ Court of two separate violent attacks that left his victims hospitalised.

The court heard that on the 17th of October 2024, Tshuma approached Luckious Dube at Jongela Business Centre, where Dube was drinking beer.

Without provocation, Tshuma struck him once on the head and once on the left ear with a machete. The victim sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Nkayi District Hospital.

The offender was convicted of assault and sentenced to 2 years imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Barely a month later, on the 9th of November 2024, Tshuma attacked another man, Methembe Mpofu, who had come to the same business centre to buy mealie meal.

He struck Mpofu on the head with a shovel and on the back with a catapult.

Mpofu suffered a deep laceration on the head and was also admitted to Nkayi District Hospital.

This time, Tshuma was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 3 years effective imprisonment.

In a separate case, Tshuma had been accused of assaulting Last Ncube Dube with bricks on 11 October 2024 but was acquitted after the court found insufficient evidence.
