Richard Choruma dies

Former Highlanders and Warriors midfielder, Richard “Dabuka Express” Choruma has passed on.

He was 42.

The Highlanders legend is said to have succumbed to kidney failure at his base in South Africa yesterday.

A message from his friend, Tazy Phiri confirming his death explained what happened to the midfield guru few days before his demise.

“Richo started not feeling well the day after he went on to play social (soccer) at Barlfour. I think it was last month. Then he started complaining about stomach pains. So it took some days then it stopped. Those pains came back (and) two days after he went to see a Doctor and they told him (that) he had ulcers and also said (that) they found poison in his body.

” He thought that he might have eaten food that had expired. He was admitted last week and he was out of hospital on Christmas Day. Esrom (Nyandoro) went to fetch him and (with) I we last spoke on the 27th in the afternoon as he was asking me to do something for him and he told me that he is taking his afternoon nap and we ddn’t speak yesterday,” he explained.

Choruma formed a formidable partnership with Charles Chilufya at Highlanders in the early 2000s which was deadly.

He earned national team call ups due to his then form.

Details of his funeral are still sketchy.
