Stepfather Sentenced to 5 Years for Attempted Murder of Infant in Chegutu

An enraged Chegutu stepfather, in a fit of rage strangled his one-year-old step-son with an electric cable to avenge his anger over a domestic violence dispute.

The offender aged 23 appeared before a Chegutu Magistrates Court and was sentenced to 5 years in prison after he was convicted of attempted murder. NPA,” said the offender was also charged with threatening to kill his 18-year-old wife, during a domestic dispute.

“The court acquitted him on this charge due to lack of sufficient evidence.

“The incident took place at a farm compound in Selous, on the 2 March 2025. “On the fateful night, the offender’s wife fled next door for safety during a domestic dispute and left behind her son who is 15 months old.”

NPA said at approximately 2250 hours, the mother returned after hearing the child crying and found the offender strangling the infant with an electric cable. “She intervened and managed to free the infant.

“The infant sustained some injuries on the neck. Upon realizing the gravity of his actions, the offender attempted to flee but in was apprehended by alert neighbours,” said NPA.
