Social media platforms have erupted in controversy following the ongoing court case involving Mai Jeremaya, who alleges that she was raped by two men, Thabo Blessing Dune and Martin Charlie, at Paradise Lodge in Eastlea.
The case has drawn intense public scrutiny after Mai Jeremaya, under cross-examination, failed to provide clear evidence supporting her rape claims. Instead, conflicting statements and courtroom revelations have cast doubt over her account, leading to a wave of backlash online.
According to the defence, both accused men denied raping her, arguing instead that the encounter was consensual and transactional. “We agreed to pay her $20 for her service,” one of the accused stated through their lawyer, Mr. Shepherd Makonde. “After we had done it, she demanded an additional $500, which was never part of the arrangement.”
In a striking moment during the trial, it was revealed that Mai Jeremaya had allegedly removed her own clothes, including her bra and socks, and had even requested that one of the men, Charlie, use a condom, facts that, according to the defence, indicate consent rather than coercion.
The case took another turn when Mr. Makonde questioned Mai Jeremaya about inconsistencies between her court testimony and the three separate statements she gave to the police.
These contradictions have further fuelled online speculation and criticism, with many users expressing doubt over the credibility of her claims, while others argue that victims should not be discredited based on inconsistencies under pressure.
While the legal process continues, the court of public opinion remains deeply divided. Some view the case as a glaring example of how s@x workers are treated unfairly and denied justice, while others accuse Mai Jeremaya of fabricating the rape claim for financial gain.
