Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has broken his silence on the sensational claims that he accepted a US$20 million bribe from President Emmerson Mnangagwa to weaken his opposition.
The allegations, which have caused a stir across social media, were made by journalist and National People’s Party spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire.
Mawarire accused Chamisa of entering a secret deal with Mnangagwa, allegedly facilitated through the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), where Chamisa was said to have accepted the money in exchange for toning down his opposition activities.
Mawarire shared the explosive claim in a post on X, asserting that Chamisa had agreed to hold back on criticizing the government in exchange for the hefty sum.
“What’s insulting about my post, and why are you bringing Chamisa into this? Do you want me to tell you more about ED and Chamisa’s RBZ $20m transaction?” Mawarire wrote.
Further elaborating on the claim, Mawarire described the alleged deal taking place in the basement parking of the RBZ building, where bags of cash were supposedly exchanged.
“Cash was the mode of payment, travellers’ bags the packaging, and holding the opposition off ED criticism was the deliverable,” Mawarire added.
When pressed for evidence to back his allegations, Mawarire refused to provide proof, suggesting that illegal transactions are often undocumented.
“I just told you the transaction was between ED and Chamisa, but you don’t want to hear it, do you?” Mawarire responded.
In the wake of the allegations, Chamisa responded with a cryptic and philosophical statement when questioned directly about the bribery claim.
“Wise creatures never accept a pig’s invitation to a muddy fight. Truth needs no lawyer. Truth defends itself. Truth stands the test of time!” Chamisa said, neither confirming nor denying the accusations.
The controversial claims have sparked widespread debate, with Chamisa’s supporters demanding clarity on the matter.
The allegations, however, remain unsubstantiated, and the opposition leader has chosen not to engage directly with the details.
