A well-known local businessman, Farai Longwe, popularly known as ‘Mr Grocery,’ reportedly shot his wife before taking his own life on Wednesday night, leaving the community in shock.
Longwe, who ran a successful chain of grocery stores in the town’s western suburbs, was a familiar figure and respected member of the local business community.
Authorities were alerted after the landlord of the property heard gunshots coming from the couple’s residence. Police arrived at the scene and discovered two bodies inside a locked bedroom.
Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, the district’s Officer Commanding Police, confirmed that a full investigation has been launched. “We have deployed a special team of detectives and are gathering information. Further details will be provided as the investigation progresses,” he said.
The motive behind the tragic incident remains unclear, leaving both authorities and the local community searching for answers.
Friends, neighbours, and customers have expressed shock and grief at the sudden loss, describing Longwe and his wife as active members of the community. Many have offered condolences to the family, as the suburb grapples with the emotional impact of the tragedy.
Police have appealed to anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
