A commuter omnibus driver in Harare has been handed a two-year prison sentence and permanently stripped of his driving privileges after dangerously driving against oncoming traffic.
The driver, identified as Freedom Ruzvidzo, appeared before the Harare Magistrates Court on Tuesday, facing a charge of reckless driving.
According to court proceedings, Ruzvidzo was operating a Toyota Hiace when he unlawfully entered a one-way street at the intersection of Second Street and Upper East Road during peak traffic hours. His actions disrupted the flow of traffic and endangered other road users.
Although no collision occurred and no one was injured, the court found that his behaviour posed a serious threat to public safety.
As part of the sentence, the magistrate revoked Ruzvidzo’s driver’s licence and issued a lifetime driving ban for vehicle classes 2, 4, and 5—categories that include commuter minibuses, light vehicles, and trucks.
Following the ruling, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) released a statement warning that reckless drivers will face severe consequences.
“Driving against traffic creates a high risk of fatal accidents. Such behaviour will be met with firm legal action, including imprisonment and lifetime bans,” the NPA stated. “Protecting public safety remains our top priority. Every reckless driver is a potential threat to life on our roads.”
