The Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) has declared 2025 a “landmark year” for the sport in the country, highlighting the successful hosting of major tournaments and international successes amid growing participation.
In a year-end statement released today, ZCF President Todd Mapingire expressed profound gratitude to partners, sponsors, and stakeholders for their support, crediting them for enabling unprecedented milestones.
“On behalf of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF), I would like to extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support throughout 2025,” Mapingire said.
“It was a landmark year for Zimbabwean chess, marked by historic achievements that would not have been possible without your partnership.”
The centrepiece of the year was Zimbabwe’s hosting of the 16th African Youth Chess Championship (AYCC) in Harare from December 7 to 13, held at Dominican Convent School and Cresta Lodge hotels.
The event drew over 500 young players from 18 African countries, earning widespread praise for Zimbabwe’s hospitality and organisation.
“Participants of the AYCC had a story to tell about Zimbabwe hospitality,” Mapingire noted in his statement.
The federation also celebrated a record-breaking turnout at the Minerva Zimbabwe Open, described as the largest tournament ever held in the country, with approximately 400 participants competing in various sections.
Other key events included the CABS Candidates Chess Tournament in Bulawayo’s central business district, the CBZ Nationals at CBZ Head Office, and the Crystal Candy Schools Chess Championships.
The year saw Zimbabwean players achieve international success, alongside the certification of a new FIDE International Arbiter and numerous FIDE arbiters.
“Your commitment has been the ‘grandmaster move’ behind our success,” Mapingire stated, emphasising the role of supporters.
Looking ahead, the ZCF president outlined priorities for 2026.
“As we look toward 2026, we are excited to build on this momentum, focusing on grassroots development, inclusivity, and technical excellence,” he said.
“We look forward to another year of winning strategies and shared victories.”
Mapingire extended thanks to the government, Ministry of Sport, Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), partners, sponsors, affiliates, fans, players, parents, executive members, and staff.
“ZCF wishes you a prosperous and successful 2026,” he concluded. The statement underscores the federation’s push to expand chess nationwide under Mapingire’s leadership, following his election as president late last year.
