Harare, Zimbabwe – The Zimbabwean capital is set to welcome some of Southern Africa’s top athletes later this month, as it hosts the 2025 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Senior Championships from July 26 to 27 at the University of Zimbabwe Athletics Track.
Organized under the banner “One Track. One Region. One Dream,” the biennial competition is expected to draw over 300 athletes and officials from at least ten countries across the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Zimbabwe, currently serving as the SADC Chair, will also act as the host nation for the regional event.
Confirmed participating nations include Zambia, Malawi, Seychelles, Lesotho, Angola, Mozambique, Mauritius, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe, with more federations anticipated to confirm attendance in the coming weeks.
“Zimbabwe is ready. As SADC Chair and host, we are proud to open our doors to the region. Every detail—from logistics to competition—is being finalized,” said Tendai Tagara, President of the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ). “The nation stands behind our athletes, and we look forward to hosting a successful and inspiring championship.”
The championships, which rotate among member countries, serve as a critical stepping stone for elite athletes preparing for continental and global meets.
Beyond athletic competition, this year’s edition is also seen as a platform for promoting regional integration, youth empowerment, and Zimbabwe’s hosting capabilities.
“This event is about regional excellence, collaboration, and celebrating the spirit of SADC youth,” said Cynthia Phiri, Secretary General of NAAZ. “Harare 2025 will be a proud moment for African athletics and a milestone for our hosting legacy.”
Preparations at the University of Zimbabwe facility are nearing completion, with infrastructure, accommodations, and technical setups reportedly on track. Organizers are also promising vibrant opening and closing ceremonies that will feature local culture, music, and community engagement.
The Championships come at a time when Zimbabwe is seeking to revive its profile on the international sports stage, and officials say the event presents an opportunity to strengthen regional solidarity through sport.
