WATCH: Exposed MPs Caught in Land Bribe Scheme to Support Mnangagwa's 2030 Term

In a developing story, 70 Members of Parliament (MPs) who are part of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party, as well as the so-called opposing Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC), have been receiving land parcels as a bribe for Mnangagwa’s controversial campaign for a second term of office to 2030.

The MPs were reported to be in the Mabelreign District Office in Harare, where the process of distributing land was being conducted.

According to investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono said that the land is taken from greenways within Ward 16 in Mabelreign and the Westgate region.

Both of them are greenways in urban areas that are intended to protect the environment and offer recreational spaces for the local community.

This land distribution is being overseen by the local government minister, Daniel Garwe, who has been referred to as one of the most vocal supporters of Mnangagwa and a proponent of his extension to 2030. The land is believed to form part of a larger agreement on politics, in which the MPs are promised that land for the sake of their vote in the coming impeachment election against the President.

Greenways, which are generally maintained to be used by the public and for environmental reasons, include trails for walking, parks and natural areas that have not been developed.

The decision to grant these areas to politicians has caused protests from environmental groups and members of the community. Some activists are calling the land seizures a violation of trust among the public. They warn that it is threatening not only the balance of nature but also the well-being of the residents who depend upon these spaces to enjoy recreation as well as stormwater management.

In response to the allegations, neither the ZANU-PF nor the CCC parties have yet issued any statements. However, this news is likely to increase the scrutiny of the Mnangagwa government as the political climate becomes more and more fraught with allegations of fraud and corruption.

Media outlets are asked to keep track of the situation since the MPs remain at the Mabelreign District Office, with reports suggesting that the land allocation continues.
