A botched break-in by four artisanal miners at a mine in Mount Darwin resulted in the death of a security guard after they allegedly pushed him down a mine shaft.
Mashonaland Central, Deputy Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Samuel Chikasha confirmed the development saying the culprits involved were arrested.
“On 18 April 2025, at around 0300 hours, David Marecha (55) who is a security guard at Tongogara mining claim. He was in company of three other security personnel.

“They saw four men sneaking into a mine shaft and tried to apprehend them. During the scuffle, Marecha was pushed into a mine shaft which is five metres deep,” said Assistant Inspector Chikasha.
He said the security guards managed to arrest one of the suspects while the other three fled from the scene.
“The arrested suspect was identified as Morgan Nyakupinda (24).
“Marecha sustained head and back injuries as a result of the fall and was taken to Mount Darwin hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he died on same day at around 0700 hours,” said Assistant Inspector Chikasha.
He said police investigations led to the arrest of Nyakupinda’s accomplices who are Isaac Bhero (29), Stanford Runhare (28) and Arnold Prosper Kanoguya (25) in connection with a case of murder
