A Chitungwiza municipal employee, Simon Maketo, tragically lost his life on Thursday following a workplace accident in Manyame Park while performing his duties.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the municipal refuse truck he was working on attempted to maneuver around a parked commuter omnibus that was blocking the road. During the process, Maketo allegedly struck his head on a precast wall, lost balance, and was subsequently hit again by the truck.
In a statement released Friday, the Municipality of Chitungwiza confirmed the incident, stating that Maketo was initially taken to St Mary’s Clinic and later transferred to Chitungwiza Central Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“Initial findings suggest that during a routine refuse collection exercise, a stationary commuter omnibus blocked the truck’s path. Mr. Maketo, who was stationed on the truck’s right side, appeared to panic during the maneuvering. He reportedly hit his head on a wall, was struck again by the vehicle, and fell to the ground,” the statement explained.
Emergency services responded swiftly, and he was transported by municipal ambulance, but efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
