A first-year student studying Agricultural Engineering at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) has sadly passed away in an apparent suicide on Wednesday, August 20.
The university’s Student Representative Council (SRC) confirmed the tragic news in an official statement. SRC spokesperson Marlvin Saint Madanda identified the deceased as Abraham Chabata, a Level 1.1 student.
While the SRC did not disclose the circumstances that led to Chabata’s death, Madanda expressed the profound sorrow felt across the university community.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Abraham Chabata, a first-year Agricultural Engineering student who died by suicide on August 20, 2025,” he said.
“This heartbreaking event has deeply affected our campus, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew him.
“This tragedy reminds us of the unseen struggles many may be facing. We encourage students to speak up about their challenges—whether with trusted friends, family, or university support services.”
In remembrance of Chabata and in support of those impacted, the SRC has declared Friday, August 22, 2025, as Black Friday. Students are encouraged to wear black on that day as a gesture of mourning, solidarity, and compassion.
