Dog Attacks and Infant Abandonment Raise Alarm in Zimbabwe

Residents of Mbizo 19 in Kwekwe have been left deeply traumatised after a stray dog was discovered carrying what appeared to be the remains of a newborn baby.

The grim incident, which occurred near an unfinished church structure, has sparked outrage and sorrow across the Midlands town.

Eyewitnesses say the disturbing discovery was made earlier this week when locals noticed the dog behaving unusually. Upon closer inspection, it became clear the animal was in possession of human remains believed to belong to a recently born infant.

Authorities are still trying to determine whether the child was alive at the time of abandonment. The remains have since been collected by police and handed over for forensic analysis and preservation, as investigators work to establish the full circumstances behind the tragedy.

This marks the second horrific dog-related death reported in Zimbabwe in recent months. In a separate case, a Bluffhill man died following a vicious attack by a neighbour’s pit bull, prompting increased public concern over animal safety and control.

The latest incident has revived calls for stronger animal management policies, particularly concerning stray dogs, and better social support systems for mothers in crisis.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko could not be reached for comment at the time of publication. However, community leaders are urging anyone with information about the infant’s parents or those who may have witnessed suspicious activity to report it to the authorities.

Child welfare organisations have weighed in, highlighting the need for safe haven laws and resources for women facing unwanted pregnancies. They stress that no one should feel forced to abandon a child in such circumstances.

Local health officials are now mobilising trauma counselling for those affected by the incident, as the community grapples with the emotional aftermath of the shocking discovery.
