Less than a year after stepping away from formal politics, Nelson Chamisa, the former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has announced his return to active political engagement — reaffirming his commitment to Zimbabweans and dismissing the notion that his exit signaled a retreat from the national stage.
Chamisa’s withdrawal from CCC in 2023 followed a highly publicized internal power struggle, during which Sengezo Tshabangu, controversially assuming the role of secretary-general, claimed authority over the party. The dispute led to court battles and deep divisions within the opposition ranks.
In a recent interview with The Standard, Chamisa emphasized that while he had walked away from the CCC, his loyalty to Zimbabweans remained unwavering.
“Leaving CCC was never about abandoning the people of Zimbabwe,” he explained. “I simply exited a compromised political structure. The party had been captured and distorted. It was no longer fit to carry the aspirations of the people.”
He described the move as one of principle, saying the public can now clearly distinguish between those who stand with the citizens and those who do not.
Chamisa used the platform to sharply criticize the ruling ZANU-PF’s Vision 2030 strategy, labeling it a political distraction rather than a developmental roadmap.
“The 2030 rhetoric is nothing but a smokescreen — a tool to evade accountability and avoid meaningful elections,” he said. “It’s a manufactured excuse to delay genuine transformation and prolong the suffering of our people.”
He reaffirmed his dedication to the millions who have backed his political vision in previous elections, insisting that their trust would not be betrayed.
Chamisa’s announcement reignited fierce debate across social media platforms, with opinions ranging from hopeful to deeply skeptical.
Some users praised his return, while others lambasted him for what they called a pattern of indecision and disorganization.

Nelson Chamisa Returns to Politics, Declares He ‘Never Left the People’
One user wrote:
“He must get serious. We are not his puppets,” while another said, “All he’s doing is adding to the confusion. What’s new here?”
Another frustrated voter declared:
“I won’t waste my time voting again. The opposition is just chasing money. They don’t care about the people.”
Despite the backlash, Chamisa remains one of the most prominent and polarizing figures in Zimbabwean politics, commanding a loyal base and persistent relevance in the opposition landscape.
