HARARE— City officials are considering a new policy that would see motorists charged for parking around the clock in the Central Business District (CBD), a major shift from the current daytime-only payment structure, according to iharare.com
Currently, parking fees apply between 8 AM and 4 PM. However, preliminary consultations are underway to extend the payment window to cover the full 24 hours in response to rising concerns over congestion and service delivery after dark.
If implemented, the proposed system would introduce an additional 16 hours of payable parking time, ensuring continuous municipal oversight and enforcement. The move is expected to increase revenue streams for the local authority while helping to manage nighttime traffic flows.
A municipal official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the city remains busy well into the night due to entertainment venues, restaurants, and informal trading activities.
“There’s still a lot of movement in the CBD after business hours. Our services need to reflect that activity and ensure order and safety throughout the night,” the official said.
The proposed plan is still under review, with city authorities weighing its feasibility, impact on motorists, and potential benefits for municipal operations.
