ZESA Holdings has announced that Hwange Power Station’s Unit 3 will be offline for statutory maintenance from 10 September to 24 October 2025, a period of 44 days. The power utility said the shutdown is part of routine measures to improve the unit’s performance and reliability.
In a statement released on 10 September, ZESA confirmed the temporary outage and assured stakeholders that the work is necessary to maintain efficient operations.
“Hwange Unit 3 will undergo scheduled maintenance from 10 September to 24 October 2025. This planned outage is essential to enhance the unit’s availability and reliability,” the statement said.
ZESA noted that four other units at Hwange will continue operating during the maintenance period to support electricity supply to the national grid.
The company apologised for any inconvenience caused and asked for public understanding, reiterating its commitment to improving power reliability and building a sustainable energy future.
The announcement has drawn varied reactions from residents. Some expressed concern about potential increases in load-shedding, while others welcomed the maintenance as overdue.
One Harare resident said: “We understand machines need servicing, but the timing is challenging. We hope ZESA sticks to the schedule.” Another added: “If this improves reliability in the long term, then it is necessary. We just need to see results.”
ZESA has not provided specific details on how the shutdown may affect load-shedding during the 44-day maintenance period.
