Concerned residents of Mabvuku and Tafara have launched a petition urging authorities to address the escalating problem of drug and substance abuse in their community.
The petition, spearheaded by the EpMafara Community Development group, highlights the surge in the use of harmful substances such as Mutoriro, Mbanje, and Tumbwa, which residents say is fueling crime and social decay.
In the petition addressed to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), local government officials, and relevant stakeholders, community members express alarm over the detrimental impact on youth and families.
Among the issues cited are the loss of future opportunities for young people, rising crime rates, the breakdown of family units, and an overall threat to public safety.
“We are witnessing a crisis that threatens to destroy the fabric of our community,” said EpMafara spokesperson. “Drug dealers and shops openly sell these substances in known hotspots, and without swift action, the situation will only worsen.”

The petition demands an increase in police presence and patrols specifically targeting areas notorious for drug activity.
It also calls for the arrest and prosecution of identified dealers, as well as the closure of shops complicit in selling illicit substances.
Moreover, the community urges the implementation of local programs aimed at educating and supporting vulnerable youth and families affected by addiction.
To bolster the campaign, the petition is being circulated widely with signature collection points established at local community centers, churches, schools, and shops.
An online platform will also be launched to expand reach and participation.
“This is a call to every Mabvuku and Tafara resident,” the petition states. “Together, we must protect our youth, restore safety, and build a hopeful future for our neighborhoods.”
Local authorities have yet to respond publicly to the petition, but residents remain optimistic that their collective voice will prompt decisive intervention.
