A Harare InDriver driver was violently attacked and lost his employer’s vehicle after being pepper-sprayed in a carjacking incident that later resulted in an accident injuring three children.
The victim, 36-year-old Gabriel Chivanga, had taken a booking to ferry a passenger from Mufakose’s Mukonono Road to Budiriro. On arrival, the customer instructed him to pick up three more people from nearby flats. Believing it was an ordinary trip, Chivanga allowed the group into his blue Toyota Aqua.
According to a police report, the attack unfolded soon after the journey began. One of the passengers, seated at the back, pretended he wanted to disembark, claiming to have reached his destination. Suddenly, Chivanga was sprayed in the face with pepper spray, leaving him disoriented and in pain. He was then shoved out of the vehicle, and the gang sped away with the car.
Harare police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case, saying the stolen vehicle, a Toyota Aqua with registration AFW 7542, is owned by 31-year-old Molline Manyati of Tynwald and is valued at US$6,580. A cellphone linked to the car’s tracking system was also taken, making recovery more difficult.
“Police are investigating a robbery case where an InDriver driver lost his car and other valuables. The total value stolen is US$6,580,” Inspector Chakanza said.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the suspects.
