Popular musician Ti-Gonzi was arrested yesterday in Mbare, Harare, on charges of reckless driving and possession of illegal drugs.
The 29-year-old artist, whose real name is Patrick Kauma Tarugarira and who originates from Hopley, was intercepted by police at the junction of Cripps Road and Remembrance Drive, close to Mupedzanhamo Market.
According to police, Ti-Gonzi attracted the attention of traffic officers after he was seen driving erratically. It was later established that he did not have a valid driver’s licence at the time of the incident.
A search of the black Mercedes-Benz he was driving led to the discovery of a half bottle of Benylin cough syrup, two rolled twists of dagga, and two additional sachets of the suspected drug.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest, saying the musician faces several charges under the Road Traffic Act (Chapter 13:11).
“The suspect was arrested for reckless driving in terms of Section 53, driving without a valid licence under Section 6, failure to comply with police instructions in terms of Section 72, as well as possession of illegal drugs,” Chakanza said.
