During the sentencing hearing for the Joslin Smith case at the Saldanha Bay Circuit High Court, social worker Errol Peterson described Steveno van Rhyn as a “threat to society,” citing a disturbing lack of remorse.
Van Rhyn, convicted alongside Kelly Smith and Jacquen Appollis for kidnapping and trafficking six-year-old Joslin Smith in February 2024, reportedly showed no concern for the child’s fate. “When questioned, he showed no empathy and said he didn’t care what happened to her,” Peterson told the court.
A probation report submitted by Peterson painted a troubling picture of van Rhyn’s character, outlining a pattern of violent behavior and a disregard for the law. According to the report, those familiar with him noted that he was quick to anger and often physically aggressive.
Despite having access to programs that could have aided in his rehabilitation, van Rhyn allegedly failed to take them seriously, further supporting Peterson’s claim that he is likely to repeat his offenses if given the chance.
The three co-accused are facing the possibility of life sentences. While court proceedings continue, the fate of young Joslin remains unknown, with her disappearance still unsolved and no new leads reported.
