Prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo has pledged major financial backing to Highlanders Football Club, one of Zimbabwe’s most historic and culturally significant teams.

He kicked off the commitment with a US$250,000 donation, part of a broader US$1 million sponsorship package intended to support the club’s operational and technical development ahead of the 2025 Premier Soccer League season.

Widely known as “Sir Wicknell,” Chivayo announced the contribution on social media, where he described Highlanders FC as not just a football team, but a “national treasure” and a “powerful symbol of unity and identity” for both Bulawayo and the entire nation.

Founded in 1926 by King Lobengula’s grandsons, Albert and Rhodes Khumalo, the club—affectionately known as “Bosso”—has long been a source of pride for its passionate supporters.

Reflecting on his emotional ties to the club, Chivayo said, “Supporting Highlanders is more than just sports sponsorship—it’s about preserving a deep-rooted cultural legacy.” He added that the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo, his uncle, had encouraged him to back both the football club and the ruling party as a way of honoring Zimbabwe’s traditions and building for the future.

“My uncle made it clear before he passed that I should always support Highlanders FC in meaningful ways,” said Chivayo. “This is about honoring his guidance and giving back to a club that’s inspired generations.”

The initial donation will go toward covering administrative costs, while the rest of the pledged funds will support player recruitment, sign-on fees, and other technical improvements throughout the season.

Chivayo has also addressed recent concerns surrounding the alleged misuse of funds by taking steps to ensure financial transparency. He appointed Jabulani Nkomo, a fellow businessman and relative, to work closely with the club’s leadership in a supervisory capacity, overseeing how the sponsorship funds are spent.

“This isn’t about interference,” Chivayo clarified. “It’s about safeguarding the integrity of Highlanders FC and ensuring the sponsorship makes a real impact.”

He also emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in sports development, aligning his initiative with President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which calls for collaborative efforts to improve the country’s economic and social well-being.

“Football unites communities,” Chivayo said. “Highlanders FC has played that role for nearly a century, and now it’s our responsibility to help them thrive.”

The gesture has been met with praise from supporters and football stakeholders, who see the funding as a major step toward restoring Highlanders FC’s dominance in Zimbabwean football.
