After Kudakwashe Tagwirei was abruptly dismissed from a ZANU-PF central committee meeting on July 3, 2025, the party’s Harare leadership is reportedly devising a new strategy to reintegrate him into the powerful body—this time, more discreetly.
Tagwirei had anticipated a formal appointment to the central committee, backed by a recommendation from the Harare provincial leadership. However, his efforts were thwarted when it emerged that he lacked official clearance from the party’s top echelons, leading to his unexpected removal from the meeting.
According to The Standard, ZANU-PF Harare is regrouping. The provincial executive has scheduled a meeting on Sunday, July 6, at Batanai Primary School in Epworth to map out a new path forward for Tagwirei’s entry into the central committee.
A source familiar with internal discussions revealed the new plan involves engineering a vacancy within the provincial leadership’s top six positions, allowing them to appoint Tagwirei. From there, he could be seconded to the central committee through established internal procedures.
Insiders suggest the target for removal is George Chimhini, the current provincial secretary for finance. The province’s chairperson, Goodwills Masimirembwa, is believed to be leading the effort to sideline Chimhini in order to create an opening for Tagwirei.
This move, however, may have broader implications. Chimhini is reportedly related to Sports Minister Anselem Sanyatwe, a close associate of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. Observers believe this maneuver could be part of a larger power struggle within ZANU-PF, with factions aligned either to Chiwenga or President Emmerson Mnangagwa vying for influence as succession speculation intensifies.
Amid rumors of his rising political ambitions, Tagwirei has dismissed claims that he is being groomed to replace Mnangagwa. He maintains he has no intention of entering a leadership contest—whether against Chiwenga or anyone else.
