Zimbabwe Launches One-Month Gun Amnesty to Curb Crime

by Bustop TV News

Zimbabwe has declared a one-month amnesty for the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms as part of efforts to tackle rising violent crime.

The initiative, announced by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), will run from September 24 to October 24, 2025. During this period, anyone in possession of an unlicensed or illegally acquired firearm can hand it over at their nearest police station without risk of arrest or prosecution. Receipts will be issued to confirm surrender.

Authorities say the operation is aimed at stemming the surge in armed robberies and other violent crimes linked to unregistered weapons. Police investigations have revealed that some of the guns in circulation originate from disbanded shooting clubs, defunct companies, or estates where licences were not renewed after the death of the legal holder. Others have been smuggled or obtained through criminal activity.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned that the amnesty is a one-time opportunity, stressing that after the deadline, a nationwide crackdown will begin.

“From October 25, the ZRP will conduct physical checks on suspected holders of illegal firearms, and those found in possession will face full prosecution,” he said.

Licensed gun owners have also been urged to update their details with the police to avoid complications. Authorities say the ultimate goal is to reduce the circulation of dangerous weapons and restore safety in communities.

“This is an opportunity for Zimbabweans to act responsibly and contribute to safer streets. After October 24, there will be no mercy,” Assistant Commissioner Nyathi added.
