Five victims who were brutally murdered in a violent attack by a man believed to be mentally ill are set to be laid to rest tomorrow in Madlambuzi Village, Matabeleland South.
The government will provide support for the funeral arrangements, which will be facilitated by Doves Funeral Services, according to Chief Madlambuzi.
The horrifying incident occurred last Wednesday when Phamani Sibanda (43) allegedly went on a deadly rampage, attacking seven villagers in Bellas and Central villages using a log, a blunt object, and a sharp weapon.
Police reported that five of the victims died at the scene, while two others, both women aged 90 and 41, sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Madlambuzi Clinic and Plumtree District Hospital, respectively.
The victims have been identified as:
-
Elliot Khupe (101)
-
Butho Tshuma (97)
-
Constance Sibanda (66)
-
Tiffan Surprise Ndlovu (6)
-
Catra Matsika (72)
All were residents of Madlambuzi.
Chief Madlambuzi said the entire community is mourning the devastating loss and will meet with both the victims’ families and that of the accused in an effort to foster healing and unity.
“As a community, we must come together during this difficult time to seek peace and closure,” he said.
Matabeleland South Senator Solani Moyo expressed deep concern over the delayed police response, noting that villagers were forced to track down the suspect themselves after the final killing occurred near Madlambuzi Dam.
“They found him calmly preparing a meal, having already changed his clothes,” Moyo said. “It is heartbreaking. He killed innocent people, including children and the elderly.”
The suspect, Sibanda, is currently in police custody.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged families and communities to closely monitor individuals with mental health conditions and ensure they receive professional care.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police strongly encourages the public to refer persons with mental health conditions to medical institutions for proper treatment,” he said. “It is vital that families remain vigilant and supportive to prevent tragedies of this nature.”
The community of Plumtree remains in shock as preparations continue for what will be an emotional funeral service on Saturday.
