A brawl after confronting a man who allegedly stole his cellphone led to the death of a Bulawayo man after he was hit and fell hard on the ground, hitting his head.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the now deceased Witness Moyo (40) of Pumula East was beaten on 25 May and died on 26 May 2025 due to head injuries sustained during the scuffle.

She said the accused, Luke Mudenda, was approached by Moyo at Pumula East shops during a beer drink. He asked Mudenda about his cellphone he allegedly stole in April 2025.

“Mudenda then hit the now deceased with an open hand once in the face, and he fell, hitting the ground with the back of his head and becoming unconscious.

“He gained consciousness after about five minutes and was helped by his friend to his place of residence since he had difficulties in walking,” said Inspector Msebele.

She said his friend visited Moyo the following day at around 1000 hours, and he was still alive and opted to go to his house and cook food for him.

“He tried to feed him, but he could not eat. He then left and returned at around 1130 hours and found the now deceased still lying in the same position and tried to wake him up, but without success,” said Inspector Msebele.

She said a police report was made and the body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for postmortem.
