South Africans are grieving the unexpected death of celebrated actor Presley Chweneyagae, whose passing was officially announced by Nina Morris Lee, CEO of talent agency Moonyeenn Lee & Associates.
“With great sorrow, we confirm the untimely passing of Presley Chweneyagae, one of South Africa’s most talented and cherished performers,” the agency said in a heartfelt statement. “He was not only a brilliant actor but also a creative force behind the internationally recognised stage production Relativity. Chweneyagae rose to global prominence through his lead role in Tsotsi, the 2006 Oscar-winning film for Best Foreign Language Film. He later starred in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, further cementing his legacy in South African cinema.
Born in Soweto, the 40-year-old actor was widely admired for his powerful screen presence and deep emotional range. In recent years, he captivated television audiences as Thuso “Cobra” Mokoena in Cobrizi, a spin-off from the award-winning series The River, demonstrating both his versatility and enduring appeal.
