A 30-year-old man from Kwekwe has been remanded in custody after allegedly pouring sulphuric acid on his wife’s face while under the influence of alcohol, coinciding with Zimbabwe’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Shakemore Manyepa appeared before the Kwekwe Magistrates Court, facing charges related to the attack. According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident occurred on 26 November at approximately 7:30 PM, when Manyepa returned home intoxicated.

The NPAZ stated that Manyepa allegedly began burning groceries he had purchased for the household. When his wife confronted him about destroying the food, the argument escalated, and he allegedly poured acid on her face.

The victim was immediately taken for medical treatment, while neighbours contacted the police, resulting in Manyepa’s arrest.

The NPAZ urged communities to actively combat gender-based violence and emphasised the importance of resolving domestic disputes peacefully and legally. “We call on communities to reject gender-based violence and promote lawful conflict resolution,” the authority said
