Mutsvangwa Sidesteps Questions on ZANU-PF Infighting

Just days after businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei handed out vehicles to ZANU PF Central Committee members, the party’s spokesperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa, has softened his stance on the ruling party’s benefactor.

Mutsvangwa, who previously cautioned Tagwirei against attempting to buy influence after failing to secure a Central Committee seat, has now shifted his position.

Speaking at the party headquarters on Monday, Mutsvangwa urged critics of Tagwirei to report any corruption concerns through official state channels.

“I don’t know the source of these serious corruption allegations against Tagwirei. In Zimbabwe, there are statutory bodies mandated to deal with such issues. If you genuinely believe he is corrupt, go to the police or the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and present your case,” Mutsvangwa said.

Tagwirei has long faced allegations of leveraging his close ties with President Emmerson Mnangagwa to win lucrative government contracts, claims he has consistently denied. His name has also become entangled in ZANU PF’s factional disputes, particularly with Harare Province lobbying for his entry into the Central Committee.

Mutsvangwa, however, clarified that Tagwirei’s co-option has not yet been finalized.

“As ZANU PF spokesperson, I speak on behalf of the party and the President, not for Patrick Chinamasa. I don’t rely on Politburo meeting minutes to confirm appointments. Only when I receive an official appointment letter can I announce who is part of the Central Committee. At the last meeting, Tagwirei was not among the members present, and several names still await clearance,” he explained.
