Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi has mounted a fresh legal challenge, this time contesting his continued placement on remand.
He briefly appeared before Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei on Tuesday, with a ruling on the matter expected on July 9.
Mzembi’s legal representative, Killian Mandiki, informed the court that they intend to submit written arguments, after which the State is expected to respond.
The latest development comes after Mzembi’s bail was revoked last month. A Harare magistrate dismissed his application seeking the cancellation of arrest warrants, citing his failure to return to court on time despite being given the chance.
Mandiki argued that Mzembi had not deliberately defaulted, telling the court that the former cabinet minister had been seriously ill and hospitalized during his time abroad. Mzembi reportedly returned to Zimbabwe only after his health stabilized.

However, the presiding magistrate found that his illness was not severe enough to prevent him from attending court proceedings.
In revoking bail, the court also noted that Mzembi was actively involved in political activities during his absence, including serving as the campaign manager for exiled former minister Saviour Kasukuwere, currently based in South Africa.
The case continues as Mzembi seeks to secure his release ahead of trial.
