The South African Police Service (SAPS) is offering a R100,000 reward for any information that leads to the identification, arrest, and successful prosecution of the individual behind the murder of 38-year-old Malawian priest Father William Banda.

The incident occurred on March 13, 2024, at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tzaneen, Limpopo. Father Banda was fatally shot while preparing for morning Mass in what police have described as a calculated attack.

According to SAPS reports, a man dressed neatly entered the church shortly after 7:00 AM, posing as a congregant. He joined the prayer session and sat beside the priest before trailing him into the sacristy. There, he allegedly shot Banda twice in the head before fleeing the scene in a white car without license plates.

Police have released a composite sketch of the suspect, who was last seen wearing black trousers, a brown shirt, and a waistcoat.

The case is currently being investigated by the Limpopo Murder and Robbery Unit. As of June 24, 2025, no arrests have been made, and the suspect remains at large.

Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any helpful information. Colonel Tinyiko Shilenge stressed the importance of community cooperation in solving the case.

Anyone with relevant information can contact Colonel Shilenge at 071 673 1814, Warrant Officer Shai at 082 465 2996, or use the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111.
