South Africa’s highest court has rejected an appeal from the family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who sought to overturn a previous ruling requiring that he be laid to rest in Zambia.
Lungu passed away at a Pretoria hospital on June 5. His family had requested permission to conduct a private burial in South Africa and exclude Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema from attending.
However, the Zambian government maintained that Lungu deserved an official state funeral in his home country.
