Zimbabwean Deminer Killed in Argentina Explosion

A seasoned Zimbabwean demining expert has tragically died following the accidental detonation of an explosive device he was handling in Argentina.

Henry Martin Douglas Macharaga, 52, was killed on August 19 when the device exploded in his hands along Argentina’s National Route 34 — a key highway that stretches through several towns and reaches the Bolivian border. Authorities in Argentina, along with his employer, have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Originally from Chirumanzu in Zimbabwe’s Midlands Province, Macharaga was employed by The Development Initiative (TDI), a UK-based organization specializing in landmine and explosive ordnance clearance. With a career spanning decades, he operated in some of the most hazardous regions across the globe, including Afghanistan, Angola, Mozambique, South Sudan, Lebanon, and various countries in Central and South America.

Colleagues described him as a highly skilled professional whose commitment to making conflict-affected areas safe saved countless lives.

Macharaga’s death has left his family devastated and in urgent need of support. Relatives have appealed to TDI for help in repatriating his body to Zimbabwe and for financial aid to support his widow and two children.

“No financial support can ever replace such a tremendous loss,” a family spokesperson said, “but assistance during this painful time would offer some relief to his young family as they begin to cope with life without him.”
