ZRP Arrests First Suspect in US$4.4 Million Ecobank Robbery

Zimbabwean authorities have made a breakthrough in the high-profile investigation into the daring US$4.4 million Ecobank heist that took place in broad daylight in central Bulawayo—one of the most audacious financial crimes in the country’s recent history.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has apprehended one suspect believed to be directly involved in the robbery, which occurred during a routine cash-in-transit operation last year.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon to face criminal charges.

Police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the arrest but declined to release further details, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

The robbery, which was carried out in just under two and a half minutes, was executed by a gang of seven who ambushed a money transfer between the bank and an armored vehicle.

Witnesses were left stunned as the gang swiftly made off with the multimillion-dollar cash haul.

It stands as Zimbabwe’s largest recorded cash robbery, both in value and speed, and has drawn widespread attention due to the professional coordination displayed by the suspects—likened by observers to a military-style operation.

Although police have remained tight-lipped until now, the recent arrest marks a significant development. Authorities say they are still actively pursuing multiple suspects believed to have participated in the planning and execution of the heist.

Investigators hope the detained suspect may help uncover the identities of other gang members and possibly reveal the location of the missing funds.

The banking industry has welcomed the arrest, viewing it as a critical step toward restoring trust in financial security measures following the shocking breach.

Financial crime analysts suggest that solving the case could help reinforce both public and institutional confidence.

Police have encouraged members of the public who may have any information related to the case to come forward. Authorities have reassured citizens of their ongoing commitment to recovering the stolen money and ensuring all individuals involved are brought to justice.
