Former Deputy Minister Chapfika Hero Status in Limbo

The hero status of the late former Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development, David Chapfika, remains uncertain as the ruling ZANU PF party has yet to announce its position, days after his death.

Chapfika, who passed away last Friday at a private hospital in Harare after a long illness, was a veteran politician and businessman who served in several government and parliamentary roles since independence. His family and supporters have expressed hope that he will be accorded national hero status, citing his contributions to Zimbabwe’s economic policies and liberation struggle.

“We are still waiting for official communication. As a family, we are proud of his service to the country, and we believe he deserves recognition at the highest level,” a family spokesperson said yesterday.

Efforts to get comment from ZANU PF officials were unsuccessful, as senior party leaders remained tight-lipped on the matter. The Politburo is expected to deliberate on Chapfika’s status in the coming days.

Meanwhile, preparations for his funeral are on hold as the family awaits guidance on the possible state-assisted burial.

Chapfika served as Deputy Minister between 2002 and 2007 and was known for championing land reform and economic indigenisation policies during his time in government.
