Govt Slashes Parking Fees, Number Plate Costs by Up to 50%

The Zimbabwean government has cut parking fees, clamping fines, and towing charges by 50% across all towns and cities, effective immediately, while reducing the cost of vehicle number plates from US$500 to US$50, Finance Minister Thuli Ncube announced during a Cabinet briefing on Tuesday.

The reductions are part of a broader review of charges aimed at easing the financial burden on motorists amid economic challenges, Ncube said.

“These measures are designed to make motoring more affordable and support citizens facing rising living costs,” he said.

The new fee structure applies uniformly to urban centres, including Harare, Bulawayo, and smaller towns.

The drastic cut in number plate costs addresses long-standing complaints about the prohibitive expense of vehicle registration, previously set at US$500.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, in collaboration with the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) and local authorities, has been instructed to implement the changes immediately.

Ncube urged motorists to report any non-compliance at municipal parking facilities or licensing offices, with the government pledging to monitor the rollout for transparency.

The announcement follows public outcry over high parking fees and punitive fines, which drivers argued were disproportionate to their incomes.
