In a demonstration of corporate social responsibility, Nyaradzo and Zimplats are providing free sunhats and sunscreen lotion to individuals with albinism at the ongoing Zimbabwe Agricultural Show.
Brenda Mudzimu, founder of the Albinism Dare to Dream Initiative, commended the companies for their thoughtful gesture. “I’m delighted to learn that people with albinism are receiving free suncream lotions and hats at the show,” she said. “This is a fantastic initiative to help combat albinism-related cancers. I’m truly grateful.”
Tatenda Mauka, a beneficiary of the program, also expressed his gratitude for the donations. “I’m so happy to receive this sunhat and sunscreen,” he said. “It’s a significant help for me. I wish they could extend their assistance to marginalized communities where people with albinism can’t afford these essential items.”
The donations are particularly important as individuals with albinism face a high risk of skin cancer due to sun exposure. According to the UN, 98% of people with albinism do not live beyond the age of 40, with skin cancers accounting for at least 80% of their deaths.
A report by “The Noble Hands of Zimbabwe 2023” revealed that 1 in 3 people with albinism in Zimbabwe die of skin cancer before the age of 40, including children as young as 8.
Nyaradzo and Zimplats’ generosity is a step in the right direction towards supporting individuals with albinism and raising awareness about their specific needs.
