Former Zimbabwean Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi has been apprehended by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and is currently appearing at the Harare Magistrates Court.
The development was confirmed by ZACC spokesperson Simiso Mlevu in a statement to NewZimbabwe.com, who said, “I can confirm the arrest. Mr. Walter Mzembi is set to appear in court today.” She, however, did not reveal the specific charges he is facing.
Mzembi, a former minister under the late President Robert Mugabe’s government, had been residing in Zambia in recent years, effectively in self-imposed exile.
His arrest comes shortly after reports surfaced indicating he had returned to Zimbabwe and allegedly met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House just days ago.
Since 2019, Mzembi has faced an outstanding warrant of arrest after failing to attend court proceedings. He is alleged to have misappropriated television sets valued at US$2 million. The equipment had reportedly been procured for public viewing areas, or fan parks, during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, when he served as tourism minister.
