Hwange residents urged to clear weep holes to prevent flooding

by Bustop TV News

Hwange Local Board (HLB) has issued an urgent plea to property owners and residents to clear and maintain weep holes in boundary walls ahead of the upcoming rainy season.

The move is aimed at preventing flooding and water damage to properties during anticipated heavy rainfall. Weep holes, small openings at the base of boundary walls, are crucial for draining stormwater naturally.

Section 78(2) of the Water Act (Chapter 20:24) mandates property owners to keep these openings unobstructed. Failure to comply may result in penalties, fines, or legal action under the Road Act (Chapter 13:18).

Acting Town Secretary P. Mabhureni emphasized the importance of open weep holes: “These small openings play a vital role in flood prevention. By keeping them clear, we can significantly reduce the risk of water accumulation and protect properties from potential damage.”

HLB is encouraging neighbors to collaborate and inspect weep holes along shared boundary walls. “This is a community effort,” Mabhureni added. “We urge residents to work together to ensure effective drainage systems throughout the community.”

In addition to this initiative, the board is nearing completion of stormwater drainage systems in key areas as part of a broader strategy to enhance Hwange’s flood resilience. “We are committed to creating a safer environment for all residents,” Mabhureni stated. “Your cooperation is essential in achieving this goal.”

HLB expressed gratitude to residents for their ongoing efforts to maintain a flood-resilient community and urged them to remain vigilant as the rainy season approaches.
