Former Cabinet Minister Joel Gabbuza is in critical condition following a brutal assault on Friday, June 7, 2025, at a homestead in Siamakwa Village, Ward 18, Binga. The attack is believed to stem from a personal dispute involving a woman with whom Gabbuza was reportedly having an affair.
According to National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Gabbuza was ambushed by two suspects who are currently at large. The assailants allegedly slashed the tyres of his vehicle before breaking into the home and attacking him with knives and an axe. He sustained multiple stab wounds to his head and hands.
Gabbuza was initially transported over 200 km to Hwange Colliery Hospital and later airlifted to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, where he underwent emergency surgery. Medical sources report that while his condition remains critical, he is stable for now.
The woman involved in the incident has not been publicly identified, and no charges have been filed against her. Local residents express shock over the violence, with some questioning the appropriateness of Gabbuza’s presence at the homestead, while others condemn the excessive force used in the attack.
Gabbuza, who served as the Member of Parliament for Binga from 2000 to 2013 and as Minister of Water Resources and Development during the Government of National Unity, is remembered as a calm and humble public servant. His family has confirmed that he is alive and receiving treatment, and they are making arrangements for his continued care.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspects to come forward as investigations continue.
