Nearly Half of Zimbabwean Men Aged 15–49 Have Never Married, New ZIMSTAT Report Reveals

Fresh data from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) shows that 45% of men aged 15 to 49 in Zimbabwe have never been married, underscoring shifting social dynamics and possible economic pressures affecting union formation.

The statistics were unveiled on Monday, June 2, during the official launch of the 2023–24 Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS) report.

According to the report, 48% of men in the age group are either married or cohabiting, 1% are widowed, and 6% are divorced or separated.

In contrast, the figures highlight distinct gender differences in marital patterns. While 62% of women aged 15–49 are currently married or living with a partner, only 23% have never been married, significantly lower than the 45% reported among men. Additionally, the divorce or separation rate among women stands at 12%, double that of men in the same age range.

The report suggests that financial hardship could be a contributing factor to the high percentage of never-married men. The traditional expectations associated with marriage—including lobola (bride price), wedding expenses, and the ongoing costs of supporting a household—may serve as deterrents for many young men, particularly those without stable income or employment.

While the data does not delve into specific motivations or cultural shifts, it paints a revealing picture of the changing marital landscape in Zimbabwe, where economic realities may be influencing personal decisions around relationships and family life.
