Police quash sewage protest in Chitungwiza

by Bustop TV News

A Chitungwiza resident, Victor Gwekerere, has expressed alarm after being warned by local police against protesting a persistent sewage problem in his community.

Gwekerere and his neighbors have been grappling with a burst sewer pipe that has posed significant health risks. In response, they planned to collect sewage samples, draft a petition, and approach the council collectively.

However, their plans were abruptly halted when Gwekerere was summoned to the police station and warned against any actions that could be construed as a public demonstration.

“The police made it clear that any protest-related activities would result in my arrest,” Gwekerere said.

The intimidation has instilled fear among residents and deterred them from pursuing their legitimate concerns.

“We just want to ensure our health and safety. But now, I feel like we are trapped,” lamented Gwekerere.

He emphasized that the warning infringes on constitutional rights, highlighting a broader trend of eroding freedoms.

Repeated attempts to reach the police for comment were unsuccessful.
