Teachers Union slams Government’s “ZANU PF Hero Worship” Curriculum

by Bustop TV News

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has launched a scathing attack on the government’s recently announced Heritage Based Curriculum, outlined in Circular No. 4 of 2024.

In a statement, ARTUZ argues the curriculum “fails to meet the needs of our students” and accuses the government of attempting to use it for “hero worshiping ZANU PF players.”

The union argues that the curriculum suppresses critical thinking and creates “individuals ripe for exploitation.”

ARTUZ compares it to the Rhodesian curriculum, designed to produce obedient individuals for farm and construction work.

“This approach harkens back to the days of the Rhodesian curriculum, which focused on producing obedient individuals for farm and construction work. We cannot allow our education system to become a tool for perpetuating oppressive systems and stifling independent thought,” the statement reads.

The teachers advocate for Civic Education as a core subject, arguing it fosters “a citizenry conscious of their rights, duties, and responsibilities.”

They also view Heritage Studies as “a ZANU PF manifesto, used to indoctrinate learners with a distorted and falsified history of the party’s supposed heroics. This is not the kind of education we want for our children.”

ARTUZ demands a review of the curriculum, prioritizing critical thinking, citizen education, and historical accuracy. They stated: “We demand that the government review the Heritage Based Curriculum, taking into account the concerns raised by teachers, students, and other stakeholders.

“It is essential that our education system promotes critical thinking, fosters citizen education, and provides an accurate and unbiased account of our nation’s history.”

They extend their demands saying: “We call on the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with unions and educators to ensure that our children receive the quality education they deserve—one that equips them with the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to shape a brighter future for Zimbabwe.”
