A bus accident on the Harare-Chirundu highway led to the discovery of 17 Malawian nationals who were traveling illegally in Zimbabwe after authorities found them hidden aboard a bus headed to Harare.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA) confirmed the development, saying they face deportations after violating the country’s Immigration Act.

“The group were intercepted on 30 March 2025 when the Achisi bus they were travelling in was involved in a fatal accident at the 165-kilometre peg along the Harare-Chirundu road.

“ZRP Karoi traffic officers, who attended the accident scene, discovered that none of the 17 passengers had immigration clearance. All were arrested and appeared before a Karoi Magistrates Court where the court ordered deportation as part of their sentence,” said NPA.

The court also ordered the Malawian nationals to pay a fine of USD 110 or, in default of payment, 30 days imprisonment.
