On Saturday, April 13, police in Beitbridge arrested a 32-year-old woman Emmaculata Chikara, after discovering a large quantity of unregistered pharmaceuticals and contraband food items in her possession.

The operation, which was initiated following a tip-off, took place at the Dulibadzimu Bus Terminus.

Emmaculata, was found with 1,496 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup. Each bottle contains 100ml of the substance, which includes codeine, a compound strictly regulated in Zimbabwe due to its potential for abuse.

Broncleer is often misused as a recreational drug, making it a key concern for health and law enforcement officials, especially in border regions where smuggling is prevalent.

In addition to the controlled medicine, authorities also seized nine boxes of chicken cuts believed to have been smuggled into the country.

Public health officials have consistently warned against the consumption of such meat products, citing risks to consumer safety and negative impacts on local poultry farmers.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has called on the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.

Investigations are ongoing to trace the supply chain behind the seized items, as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle smuggling networks operating through the Beitbridge border.
