Earlier this year Zimbabweans sighed a bit of hope with regards to the fight against the cancerous corruption disease that has permeated our country.
Buoyed by the strong words from the man himself, President Emmerson Mnangagwa when he swore in a new look ZACC board which compromised some former opposition elements such as Jesse Fungai Majome .
The ZACC chairperson wife to Rt Lt Gen Sibusiso Moyo drew mixed feelings but however the general consensus was, she is connected to one of the most powerful, her husband and it will act as a shield and buttress her actions.
A number of high profile individuals were arrested including ZBC CEO Mr Patrick Mamvura . Director of state residents Mr Douglas Tapfuma was also arrested
For the first time, a sitting cabinet minister in the name of Prisca Mupfumira was arrested. Mupfumira the then minister of Environment Tourism and hospitality
Mupfumira allegations are sterned from her time as Public service minister where she is alleged to have siphoned millions from NSSA . Her arrest made news and everyone was talking about it. The news was all over the internet and the streets whispers could be heard.
She spent several weeks in remand prison and was released on bail.
Fast forward this week, Zimbabweans were yet again treated to yet another breaking news. Hon Jorum MacDonald Gumbo, Min in the President office in charge of monitoring and implementation of government projects was arrested.
Just like much high profile cases her arrest made shockwaves. Amiss to the arrest his lawyer Selb Hwacha the next day come out saying his client was never arrested.
ZACC Chairperson Rt Judge Loice Matanda Moyo speaking to the Herald conflicted Hwacha saying Min Gumbo has a case to answer.
She further said ZACC was closing the net on 44 high profile individuals some in government.
Then comes the question: Are we watching a soap opera. Is this a well-choreographed drama meant to distract the public from the economic quagmire that is ravaging the country.
This reporter when the news about Hon Jorum Gumbo’s arrest took the streets. With the quest to understand the public feeling with regards to corruption.
The messages from the streets established a lot of reservations with regards to corruption arrests.
Social media is always abuzz with disdain and loathing of the government’s approach to corruption.
In comes the biggest question, are we being taken for a ride? Which season are we now as the catch and release drama unfold. Is this a tug of factions outwitting each other.
Indeed on time will tell if there is ever sentencing or return of the alleged loot.
