Masvingo – Following the extension of the national lockdown by two weeks, Zaka councilor, Stephen Harudzibwi is raising COVID 19 awareness.
The awareness campaign is meant to motivate people to adhere to the national lockdown and prevent the spread of the corona virus.
To date Zimbabwe has 31 COVID 19 confirmed cases, 5 recoveries and 4 deaths.
Globally the total of infected cases has surpassed 3 million.
Harudzibwi Zanu PF Councillor for ward 15 in Zaka said people in his ward were adhering to the lockdown regulations.
“People in my ward have came to understand the importance of adhering though there are a few who are stubborn. There is need to adhere as this will save us all in the long run. I am happy there are no more social gatherings as WHO recommended. Even beer brewery we banned it and people have got used to that.
“The only problem now is hunger in my ward which will become a challenge and with the lock down extension l fear people will end up finding ways to sustain a living so l hope the government will intervene and save lives. The other challenge is sanitizers and masks, people in my ward really need them,” said Harudzibwi.
He added that he has been educating people in his ward on how they should practice good hygiene and regularly wash hands.
“In my ward, ward 15 people now have the knowledge about Covid -19 and they know the virus kills so l keep on urging them to wash hands with running tap water and soap and avoid shaking hands.
As people are adhering, hunger is the only problem they are facing in homes hence here and there people end up getting out of their homes,” he said.
The Councilor did not work alone to raise awarness but with his 75 headmen and 4 village heads to also educate people wherever they are with the help of health workers.
The Health ministry stays on alert and advise people to protect themselves and wash hands frequently, avoid crowded places and maintain social distance.
