Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei has come under public scrutiny after making contradictory statements about how he started his business empire.
In a recent interview, Tagwireyi claimed he launched his venture with just $7,500. However, in an earlier video, he stated that he began his entrepreneurial journey after selling his house for $21,000—raising questions over the accuracy and consistency of his narrative.
The conflicting claims have triggered widespread criticism, particularly on social media, where many users have accused the fuel and finance magnate of being dishonest or evasive about his financial beginnings.
Prominent opposition leader and lawyer Thabani Mpofu also weighed in, questioning Tagwireyi’s credibility and calling for greater transparency regarding his business origins—especially in light of his links to state-affiliated enterprises and controversial procurement contracts.
”Wow, it’s totally understandable that Tagwireyi’s business startup figures fluctuate wildly between $7500 and £21,000. I mean, who needs consistency when you’re speaking different languages to different crowds and wearing different robes? It’s not like it’s a huge discrepancy or anything…”
As the backlash grows, the incident has reignited broader public discourse around wealth accumulation, corruption, and accountability among Zimbabwe’s economic elites—many of whom are believed to benefit from political connections.
However, other social media users defended the businessman.
”Two things can be true at the same time…
If a car’s take-off begins at zero and is measured at 4 seconds [the standard for measuring takeoff speed] and then at full speed, it doesn’t invalidate the fact that at some point it passed through 10km/h.
